Motorcyclist dies after crashing into car door which 'opened suddenly' at traffic light

SINGAPORE - A motorcyclist died after crashing into a car door which opened without warning in a road accident on Wednesday (Feb 22).

The accident happened at about 9.30pm at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 towards Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, police said.

A motorcyclist, 27, was unconscious when he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The car had stopped at a traffic light and, for reasons unknown, a passenger sitting in the front seat of the car allegedly opened the door twice, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The motorcyclist happened to be passing by and crashed into the open door. The impact caused him to be thrown into the air and he landed about 10m away, said Wanbao.

The passenger, a 34-year-old man, was arrested for causing death by a negligent act, police said.

Passers-by stopped to help, the Chinese evening daily reported. Some helped to direct traffic and a doctor tried to resuscitate the rider, Wanbao said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
