The big story of the week, of course, was the unexpected big sweep by American businessman Donald Trump of the US presidency, as well as the gains made by his Republican colleagues in both chambers of Congress on his coat-tails. No one saw this coming; even some Trump aides were said to be surprised by the size of the support he received. Our correspondents in the United States - Jeremy Au Yong, Melissa Sim and Nirmal Ghosh - try to make sense of it all. We also asked our correspondents in Asia to give us their take on what it all portends. Ravi Velloor, our Global Affairs commentator, sums this up well. Meanwhile in Singapore, the presidency was also in the news, with Parliament passing the much-debated constitutional changes to how Singaporeans go about picking their elected president. The amendments kick in from the 2017 election, which will be reserved for Malay candidates. Do also check out our profiles of the first batch of five nominees for this year's Straits Times Singaporean of the Year award. If you know of someone who you think we should consider for the award, please do let us know. I hope you enjoy this week's selection. Many thanks for reading The Straits Times.
