SINGAPORE - A widely-circulated video of a baby being violently thrown around and shaken here over the past week is believed to be from the same case that was reported in Ipoh, Perak, last month, according to Malaysian media.

The Malaysian Insider said police have confirmed that the disturbing 51-second video of a baby crying in distress as it was tossed around involves the same young mother who was detained on April 10.

Ipoh district deputy police chief, Anuar Othman, was quoted as saying that the 17-year-old mother had made a separate recording and that "there is no issue of a new abuse case being reported".

"The baby has been looked after by its grandmother since it was discharged from hospital," he added.

The first video went viral in April, and shows the baby boy crying after an unseen woman slaps him on the face and body repeatedly.

Police investigations revealed that the 18-year-old father and his 17-year-old wife were going through a divorce, and the resulting argument led to the mother taking her anger out on the baby.

Authorities earlier said that the baby did not suffer serious injury.

The woman was given counselling by the Perak Victim Care Office and the baby is being monitored by the Welfare Services Department.

The case is still being investigated.

Those found guilty of abusing children could be fined RM20,000 (S$7,500) or jailed for not more than 10 years.
