Schooling composes and psyches himself prior to training at the University of Texas at Austin. During his early years in the United States, the young swimmer found it really hard. He said: "I was homesick all the time. I would call and say I want to come home." But he slowly got used to life there and eventually blossomed into a star.ST PHOTO: SANJAY NAIR

Schooling's natural affinity in the pool was evident from a young age. Close friend and national swimmer Teo Zhen Ren recalled how, even as a nine-year-old, Schooling was always the favourite whenever he raced and was beating boys older than him in almost every stroke.PHOTO: WILLY FOO

In 2009, he smashed Singapore's oldest junior record, the U-14 200m butterfly, with a time of 2min 10.56sec.ST FILE PHOTO
